Country Club Weekend - Discovering Bronte Country

Saturday 5th - Monday 7th November 2016

Join us for this very special Country Club Weekend as we journey to Bronte Country and step back in time to the golden age of steam train travel on the Keighly & Worth Valley Railway, which is perhaps most famous for its role in the 1970 film version of Edith Nesbit's story The Railway Children. We also visit Haworth and the Bronte Parsonage Museum, home to the famous Bronte Sisters. Discover the fascinating history of the Brontë’s lives and their Parsonage home and step back in time and explore Haworth's remarkable churchyard and the village’s Main Street as the Brontë’s would have known it in the early nineteenth century.

Country Club Weekend Itinerary

Marriott Hollins Hall

SATURDAY - We depart Redhill this morning and travel to the 4* Marriott Hollins Hall Hotel & Country Club near Baildon in the heart of Bronte Country, where we arrive mid-afternoon. On arrival, your weekend stay starts in style as you will be shown to the Bronte Suite where a traditional afternoon tea will be served. Whilst you enjoy afternoon tea, the hotel porters will be busy transferring your luggage to your room.

Following some leisure time, this evening we enjoy dinner at the hotel. Meals – Afternoon Tea, Dinner

SUNDAY - This morning following breakfast we begin our full day touring the main aspects of Bronte Country with a short visit to the village of Thornton on the outskirts of Bradford, in the heart of West Yorkshire's Bronte Country for photographs.

Situated on Market Street  is the Bronte Birthplace (now a Bistro), where the Bronte Sisters (along with their brother Branwell) were born before moving to Haworth. Patrick and Maria Bronte moved in to the property with their infant child (Elizabeth, who was born in 1815 at their previous home in Hartshead), with Charlotte, Branwell, Emily and Anne being born in 1816, 1817, 1818 and 1820 respectively. During this time Patrick was curate at the Old Bell Chapel in Thornton.

Bronte Parsonage
We depart Thorton and take the short drive to Haworth. Situated above the Worth Valley on the edge of the bleak Pennine moors, Haworth is internationally famous for its connection with the Bronte sisters, who wrote most of their famous works while living at the Haworth Parsonage (which is now a museum owned and maintained by the Bronte Society) while their father was incumbent parson at the adjacent Haworth church.

On arrival in Haworth we give you some free time to attend morning worship at the church before visiting the Bronte Parsonage Museum. In order to enhance your visit to both Haworth and the Parsonage Museum, we have included a talk on the Brontes and walking tour of Haworth. Both the talk and walking tour will be provided by a member of the Bronte Society.

Following the Parsonage visit and walking tour, we allow you some more free time in Haworth for lunch. There are many good tea rooms, souvenir and antiquarian bookshops, restaurants, pubs and hotels (including the "Black Bull" - where Branwell Bronte's demise into alcoholism and opium addiction allegedly began).

Keighley & Worth Valley Railway

This afternoon, we come to another major highlight of this tour as we take the short drive to Oxenhope for a return journey on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway. The railway not only travels through the heart of Bronte Country, but is also famous as the film location for the 1970 film ‘The Railway Children’, based on the children’s book by E.Nesbit.

Late afternoon, we return to your hotel followed by some leisure time before enjoying dinner in the hotel restaurant. Meals – Breakfast, Dinner

MONDAY – Following breakfast, we say goodbye to the Marriott Hollins Hall Hotel for the journey home to Redhill, where we arrive mid afternoon. Meals – Breakfast
