Join us for this very special six day religious heritage tour to the North East Of England.
The North East of England has a strong religious past, as can be seen in works such as the Lindisfarne Gospels and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle. The work of the 7th-century Cuthbert (634–687 AD), Bede (673–735 AD) and Hilda of Whitby (614–680 AD) being hugely influential in the early church and are still venerated today. These saints are usually associated with the monasteries on the island of Lindisfarne, Wearmouth – Jarrow, and the Abbey at Whitby but they are also associated to many other religious sites in the region.
The area is also home to Durham World Heritage Site, which was inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1986. Explore Durham Cathedral, one of Eurpoe’s greatest medieval buildings, and the Shrine of St Cuthbert, one of England’s most revered saints. Discover Durham Castle, built 900 years ago to protect the English borders, and now the home of Durham University – a world-class institution.
Itinerary subject to variation due to the tide times for the causeway connecting Lindisfarne & the mainland.
MONDAY – From Your local departure point, we travel to the 4* Marriott Newcastle Gateshead Hotel, where we arrive late afternoon. TUESDAY – This morning following breakfast, a Blue Badge Guide once again joins us as we take a tour of Hadrian’s Wall Country this morning.
Our first stop this morning is Vindolanda (admission included), which was a Roman auxiliary fort (castrum) just south of Hadrian's Wall in northern England. Located near the modern village of Bardon Mill, it guarded the Stanegate, the Roman road from the River Tyne to the Solway Firth. It is noted for the Vindolanda tablets, among the most important finds of military and private correspondence (written on wooden tablets) found anywhere in the Roman Empire. This site is home to a late roman chapel and post roman mausoleum.
Following some free time for lunch, we enjoyed a guided tour of Hexham Abbey with our Blue Badge Guide. Hexham Abbey has been a place of solace and refuge for over 1,300 years, and welcomes people of all faiths and none to enjoy its beautiful architecture and atmosphere and to explore its fascinating history.
This afternoon, we enjoy a visit to Escomb Saxon Church.
The village of Escomb is situated two miles west of Bishop Auckland in the Wear Valley. The church was built around 675 AD with stone probably from the Roman Fort at Binchester. It was originally thought that the church was an offshoot of one of the local monasteries, but this is only one of several possibilities as there are no known written records until 990 AD.
Late afternoon we return to your hotel in time for dinner. Meals – Breakfast, Dinner
WEDNESDAY – This morning following breakfast, a Blue Badge Guide joins us as we visit the newly revamped Jarrow Hall, Bede's World & St. Paul's Church attraction in Jarrow and the cathedral city of Durham.
Jarrow Hall - Anglo-Saxon Farm, Village and Bede Museum (formerly Bede's World) is a museum in Jarrow, England, re-opening in October 2016 which will celebrate of the life of the Venerable Bede; a monk, author and scholar who lived in at the Abbey Church of Saint Peter and saint Paul Wearmouth-Jarrow, a Double-monastery at Jarrow and Monkwearmouth (today part of Sunderland). The site will feature a museum and other educational services dedicated to the life and times of the famous monk, with other features and attractions - including a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon farm and the 18th Century Georgian building Jarrow Hall.
We arrive in Durham at lunchtime and have included lunch at Durham Cathedral.

THURSDAY (Subject to Tides) – Following breakfast, we are joined by a Blue Badge Guide, as we embark on a full day tour of Northumbria’s Coast, which is rich in religious heritage.
Our first stop this morning is the seaside town of Seahouses, where we join a boat trip to the Farne Islands. St Cuthbert spent over 10 years living as a hermit on Inner Farne and was on the island when, in 684, he was informed he had been elected Bishop of Lindisfarne. Cuthbert had moved to the island in 676 and died here in 687. He was buried on nearby Lindisfarne. The present complex of buildings occupies the site of Cuthbert's original cell. St Cuthbert's Chapel still links the Island to its monastic past. The building dates from the 1300’s but was heavily restored in the 19th-century when the present furnishings were introduced.
Late afternoon, we depart Lindisfarne and return to your hotel in time for dinner. Meals – Breakfast, Dinner
